First Steps was established in 1987 by Mrs.
Christine Phillips. She is a Hong Kong qualified kindergarten teacher.
She originally taught at St. Catherine's Kindergarten for five years.
All of the teachers at First Steps are mature native English speakers who live in
Hong Kong with their husbands.
The children are taught by following a set syllabus. This mainly involves oral
work, with some written work for primary and above.
Kindergarten children, 3-6 yrs, are taught on a theme basis using a wide range of
visual aids. They spend time on phonics, sequences, picture description etc.
Primary and secondary school children following a structured course
which is topic based. During the lesson all the fundamentals will be covered
and problem areas identified - vocabulary, adjectives, adverbs, listening
skills etc. The pupils will be involved in about 30 minutes concentrated
oral English practice. In addition they will complete various written
exercises using a series of text books. These will cover composition,
comprehension, and grammar.
